Dear Colleagues, As this is our first newsletter for 2024, I want to extend my sincere gratitude to each of you for taking time to read about the many exciting and important events that have taken place over the past few months. The year took off with great momentum as we prepared for World Wetlands Day, where I celebrated in India for the very first time—and what an unforgettable experience it turned out to be. I was truly motivated by the remarkable organization, particularly in Indore, where the celebrations took place. Equally inspiring was the enthusiasm of local citizens, many of whom have been active in the wetland conservation community for decades. Particularly impressive was the global participation in celebrating this day, under the theme: "Wetlands and Human Wellbeing." In an era marked by the Triple Planetary Crises and numerous other challenges, wetlands emerge as pivotal to our overall wellbeing. Their importance will undoubtedly endure for generations to come. As the saying goes, "The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step." That's why, for the first time in the history of our Convention, we honoured 12 remarkable women as "Women Changemakers in the World of Wetlands" for International Women’s Day. This marks the beginning of what will become more than just an annual event, but a signature campaign for our Convention in the future. Stay tuned for more exciting developments. March was also a significant month as it saw key observances like the International Days of Wildlife, Seagrass, Forests, and Water, which are all closely linked to our wetlands work. I sincerely want to thank you for being a part of our journey—here’s to staying engaged and connected for the love of wetlands.
Best regards, Dr Musonda Mumba Secretary General, Convention on Wetlands |
