Dear Colleagues, Greetings from Gland, where a cold front from the Alps has whisked away summer and swiftly given way to autumn. Earlier this month, I attended the Africa Ministerial Conference for the Environment (AMCEN) in Abidjan. The heads of the three Rio Conventions – UNCBD, UNFCCC, and UNCCD – were present, each sharing updates on their upcoming COPs, as did I. Zimbabwe’s Minister of Environment, Dr Sithembiso Nyoni, also delivered a powerful intervention about our COP15 in 2025. COP15 will help propel wetlands to the forefront of the global environmental agenda, which is important for conservation and restoration—all in the larger context of using nature-based solutions to address the most pressing environmental challenges we face today. We are now officially in #Countdown Mode for COP15, set for July 2025 in Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. At the 63rd Standing Committee in June, Zimbabwe as the host country presented the COP15 logo and reported on their preparations. Contracting Parties are looking forward to meeting in Victoria Falls and advancing the work of the Convention in the aim of ensuring the protection and wise use of wetlands. Speaking of COPs, this year sees all three Rio Conventions hosting their COPs in close succession—starting with UNCBD, followed by UNFCCC, and concluding with UNCCD. Our Convention will be actively engaged in all of them, and we look forward to sharing our insights, particularly around wetlands in the context of biodiversity, climate, and land issues. The months ahead will be busy for the Secretariat as we gear up for STRP27 in December and SC64, scheduled for 20-24 January 2025. In the meantime, the Secretariat is preparing documentation for the meeting and looking forward to receiving draft resolutions from Contracting Parties. In the coming weeks, I will be meeting with a number of diplomatic missions within the UN system and other international organizations to strengthen our collaboration. Thank you, as always, for taking the time to read our newsletter. Stay tuned for more updates, both here and on our website, where you’ll will find upcoming features and news stories. Best regards, Dr Musonda Mumba Secretary General, Convention on Wetlands |
