Dear Colleagues, Time does indeed fly. As I have just passed the six-month mark in my in my role as Secretary General, I want to provide you with an overview of my experiences during these incredibly intense and insightful months. World Wetlands Day in February was a wonderful opportunity for Contracting Parties to celebrate wetlands and the benefits they provide. This year’s theme “It’s time for wetland restoration” put a focus on the actions countries are taking to restore wetlands. During the WWD celebrations I visited Costa Rica for the launch of the country’s first ever Blue Carbon Strategy. My tour of the region also encompassed meetings with Parties of the Caribbean Wetlands Ramsar Regional Initiative (CariWet) in Belize (where the IKI project meeting was hosted by the Government of Belize), and Mexico as well, where I visited two Ramsar Sites. More recently, key environmental and international days such International Women’s Day, International Forest Day and World Water Day have been celebrated and well-publicized, involving my strategic trip to New York for the UN 2023 Water Conference which was only the second such Conference in 47 years. On this visit I was accompanied by Jerker Tamelander our Director of Science and Policy. I would like to share with you the statement I made in my address to the General Assembly on why wetlands are central to the water agenda here. My team and I also managed to dedicate some time to further develop our workplan for the year and triennium, and begin preparations the 62nd meeting of the Standing Committee (SC62) in September. Representatives of the Secretariat travelled to Zimbabwe a few weeks back for an initial preparatory meeting with the host country and visit the site for the 15th meeting of the Conference of the Contracting Parties (COP15), taking place in 2025. Over the past weeks a number of Working Groups have met including the Strategic Plan Working Group (virtually), the Youth Working Group and the communication, capacity building, education, participation and awareness (CEPA) Oversight Panel. The Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) has been constituted and a Chair elected. The STRP will be meeting in Gland from 2 to 5 May. The new website is almost here, do please look out for that. Lastly, I would like to sincerely thank the Contracting Parties for their unwavering support and also the Secretariat team for their sterling efforts day in, day out at Headquarters. Sincerely, Dr Musonda Mumba Secretary General, Convention on Wetlands |
