Angola becomes the 172nd Party to the Convention

Date: 12.10.2021

To: Heads of Administrative Authorities and National Focal Points

The Secretariat is pleased to announce that the Republic of Angola has acceded to the Convention on Wetlands as amended in 1982 and 1987, as its 172nd Contracting Party. The Convention enters into force for Angola on 10 October 2021.

Angola is proposing to designate ten wetland areas for inclusion in the List of Wetlands of International Importance (Ramsar Sites). These cover coastal and inland wetlands which are rich in biodiversity and include many rare and notable plants and animals. Designation as Ramsar Sites will provide protection from the threats of natural resource exploitation, land use change and climate change.
