Opportunities to develop requests to be submitted to IBPES

Message from the Secretary General to Ramsar Convention Administrative Authorities and National Focal Points

 

The Multidisciplinary Expert Panel and the Bureau of the Intergovernmental Science-Policy Platform on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Services (IPBES) have issued a call for requests, inputs and suggestions on short-term priorities and longer-term strategic needs that require attention and action by IPBES as part of its future work programme.

 

At its 13th meeting (Dubai, United Arab Emirates, 21-29 October 2018), the Conference of the Contracting Parties to the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands adopted Resolution XIII.8 on Future implementation of scientific and technical aspects of the Convention for 2019-2021. According to paragraph 13 of the Resolution, the Conference of the Parties approved the guidelines for submitting proposals to IPBES contained in Annex 4 of the Resolution. The Conference of the Parties requested that the Scientific and Technical Review Panel review proposals submitted and provide advice to the Standing Committee in this regard.

 

The Ramsar Secretariat was requested to facilitate the process outlined in Annex 4 of the Resolution and subsequently communicate any submission to IPBES before 31 December 2018, in order to meet the deadline established by IPBES for Multilateral Environmental Agreements.

 

The Secretariat therefore invites Contracting Parties to submit their requests, inputs and suggestions regarding short-term priorities and longer term strategic needs that require attention and action by IPBES as part of its future work programme. To allow completion of the process established by the Conference of the Parties, within the specified deadline, requests should be submitted to the Secretariat by 19 November 2018 at the latest. https://www.ipbes.net/sites/default/files/em_2018_14_call_for_requests.pdf

 

All requests should be accompanied by a formal signed note of submission and may be transmitted to the Secretariat either:

-     by mail, by a registered Administrative Authority or National Focal Point or through the diplomatic channel; or

-     by email to Francisco Rilla rilla@ramsar.org, from the registered email address of an Administrative Authority or National Focal Point.

 

The Secretariat will acknowledge receipt of all formal submissions to be considered by the Standing Committee, in accordance with Resolution XIII.8.
