Strategic Plan online consultation workshops

Date: 20.11.2023

To: National Focal Points

Please find below a communication from the Co-Chairs of the Strategic Plan Working Group (Canada and Brazil) on the Strategic Plan online consultation workshops.

Dear National Focal Points,

Through Resolution XIV.4 the Contracting Parties agreed on the framework for preparation of the Fifth Strategic Plan. The Resolution confirms the role of the Strategic Plan Working Group, and outlines the principals guiding the process and the elements which should inform the draft. A key component of the development of the Fifth Strategic Plan is the implementation of engagement and consultation activities to build a broad coalition of relevant actors necessary to implement the new Plan to 2030 and beyond.

A range of consultation and engagement activities have been conducted. The Convention has recently undertaken an online questionnaire survey to gather information on the challenges that wetlands face and to understand the best solutions for the delivery of conservation and wise use. More than 1350 responses were received providing a robust evidence base. As part of an open, transparent and inclusive process, you are invited to participate in an online consultation workshop. The workshop will be interactive and will explore the outcomes of the recent online questionnaire survey and generate information that will shape the contents of the Fifth Strategic Plan. The workshop will last approximately 90 minutes. Workshops will be held on regional and sub-regional basis on various dates [see below]. It is hoped that you can participate and ensure that your views and ideas are captured in order to develop an inclusive Fifth Strategic Plan.

The workshops will review the findings of the questionnaire survey and investigate the following questions through the use of an interactive virtual whiteboard (Miro board – Instructions attached):
  • Do attendees broadly agree with the top three negative drivers of wetland degradation and loss for the region?
  • Do attendees broadly agree with the top five solutions for delivering conservation and wise use proposed for the region?
  • For each of the top five solutions for your region
    •  What delivery mechanisms can be used to achieve the solutions?
    •  What target(s) should be set for implementing each solution?
    •  What indicator(s) should be used to measure success (or failure) over the life of the 5th Strategic Plan?
Please use the following links to access the workshops. Please note that different time/dates have been allocated for different contracting parties. Participants will need to use both the Zoom link and the Miro link to fully participate in the workshop.
