Brief on the Convention on Wetlands for the climate change conference
The 28th Conference of the Parties (COP28) of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) will take place from 30 November to 12 December 2023.
Resolution XIV.6, inter alia, encourages Contracting Parties to the Convention on Wetlands that are also Parties to other MEAs such as UNFCCC and the Paris Agreement to consider, as appropriate, the relevance of their actions in implementing the Convention on Wetlands, and instructs the Secretariat to continue working to strengthen collaboration with MEAs such as UNFCCC.
The Secretariat has prepared a brief on Harnessing Wetland Wise Use, Protection and Restoration in Delivering Climate Change Outcomes (enclosed). The brief highlights the importance of scaling up wetland conservation and restoration for effective climate change mitigation and adaptation, and identifies relevant commitments and efforts under the Convention on Wetlands.
You are encouraged to use this brief in preparations for COP28, including sharing it with your delegations to COP28 and relevant partners, and drawing on it in communication and outreach activities. The brief and other information on the Secretariat’s engagement in COP28 are available at https://www.ramsar.org/news/climate-change-and-wetlands.
