As part of a dedicated consultation on the use of Earth observation technologies for wetland inventory, assessment, monitoring, and conservation, a dedicated Earth Observation Day was held on 6 December 2024. The event aimed to explore how innovative technologies could better support the monitoring of wetlands and their sustainable use, and to gather expert input on current challenges, opportunities and collaborative approaches. Held alongside STRP27, the one-day event included presentations from the European Space Agency (ESA), the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA), the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)-DHI, Digital Earth Africa and MedWet. The programme included use-case demonstrations and regional perspectives, as well as a moderated panel discussion that emphasised the opportunities and challenges of scaling up the use of Earth observation for wetland-related applications. The programme also emphasised the importance of user-driven approaches, improved access to ground-validation data and greater coordination with global initiatives such as GEO Wetlands. The consultation has resulted in a series of recommendations, including a dedicated convention initiative (GEO Wetlands) to support the use of earth observation tools, developing essential wetland variables and enhancing regional cooperation for capacity building and data access. These recommendations are detailed in the consultation report, which is provided as Annex 2 to the STRP Chair's report to COP15. |
