Other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) for the conservation and wise use of wetlands

We are pleased to share a new Briefing Note prepared by the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Convention on Wetlands. Briefing Note 14 Other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) for the conservation and wise use of wetlands (Task 4.1 of the STRP Workplan 2023-2025)  was developed in collaboration with IOPs, STRP Focal Points and Observers.

The Briefing Note outlines the criteria and processes for recognising wetlands as OECMs, including governance, long-term conservation outcomes, and monitoring effectiveness. It also outlines how OECMs can complement existing protected area networks, promote equity and indigenous leadership, enhance wetland management in complex landscapes and seascapes, and assist in achieving global biodiversity goals, particularly Target 3 of the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework. Case studies and practical tools are included to help Contracting Parties and stakeholders apply this guidance in national and local contexts.
