Global Wetland Outlook 2025: Valuing, conserving, restoring and financing wetlands

We are pleased to share the new Global Wetland Outlook prepared by the Scientific and Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Convention on Wetlands. The Global Wetland Outlook 2025: Valuing, conserving, restoring and financing wetlands (Task 5.1 of the STRP Workplan 2023-2025) was developed in collaboration with IOPs, STRP Focal Points and Observers.

This flagship publication provides a comprehensive assessment of the current state of wetlands worldwide, including the societal and economic costs of wetland degradation and loss, and the investment required to conserve and restore these vital ecosystems.

It highlights the urgent need for financial and policy action. It sets out evidence-based ways to enhance wetland conservation and restoration, such as integrating wetland values more effectively into decision-making processes, recognising their central role in the global water cycle, and using innovative financial tools and mechanisms.

The Global Wetland Outlook 2025 was launched at a press event at the United Nations Office at Nairobi (UNON) on 15 July during the Twentieth Session of the African Ministerial Conference on the Environment (AMCEN-20). A recording of the launch event is available here:
