Webinar on implementing a structured National Wetland Inventory process

Date: 20.11.2025

To: Heads of Administrative Authority and National Focal Points

The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands is organizing a training webinar for Contracting Parties on the new guidance document “Guidance for Implementing a Structured Process for National Wetland Inventory”. The webinar will be held online on 16 December 2025, from 13:00 to 14:00 CET.

National Wetland Inventories are key for adaptive management of nation-wide wetland resources as well as for Contracting Parties to report on several international commitments. The guidance aims to support a structured National Wetland Inventory (NWI) process, whether starting, completing or updating an NWI. It provides improved process guidance for NWIs, encompassing planning, data collection, data use and data update phases with clear division of roles and responsibilities. It also explains the challenges to data access for NWIs and the principles that need to be followed to address those challenges.

The webinar will consist of a presentation of the guidance document by the lead author, PJ Stephenson (IUCN SSC Species Monitoring Specialist Group and University of Lausanne) and an interactive Q&A session where Contracting Parties will be able to ask questions.

The webinar will be held in English and will last 60 minutes. A recording of the webinar will be available to download on the Convention website following the webinar.
