World Wetlands Day, 2 February 2026
The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands presents its compliments to the Permanent Missions and Administrative Authorities of the Contracting Parties to the Convention, and has the honour to convey the following information regarding the observance of World Wetlands Day, 2 February 2026.
The Secretariat recalls that United Nations General Assembly Resolution 75/317 (2021) proclaimed 2 February as World Wetlands Day and invited the Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands to facilitate the observance of the Day, within existing resources, including by raising awareness, mobilizing outreach efforts, and supporting Member States in highlighting the importance of wetlands.
In line with this mandate, and in preparation for the 2026 observance, the Secretariat encourages all Contracting Parties to consider marking the Day through high-level video messages from heads of state or government, ministers, or other senior national authorities, addressing the 2026 global theme Wetlands and traditional knowledge: Celebrating cultural heritage. These video statements serve as a powerful means to underscore national commitment to wetland conservation and to amplify visibility across regions.
The Secretariat would be grateful if such messages could be shared with the Secretariat in advance of 2 February 2026, to facilitate reporting to Contracting Parties and the General Assembly on implementation by Parties. Videos may be featured on the Convention’s official communications platforms.
The Secretariat stands ready to support Parties with a campaign toolkit that provides key messages, visual assets and background information on World Wetlands Day to assist in the preparation of videos. A campaign toolkit can be requested by email to odongo@ramsar.org.
The Secretariat of the Convention on Wetlands avails itself of this opportunity to renew to the Permanent Missions and Administrative Authorities of the Contracting Parties the assurance of its highest consideration.
