Side event details
The session aims to enhance awareness and knowledge about the crucial role of wetlands in achieving national climate change mitigation and adaptation goals. The brief “Wetlands in climate commitments, preliminary results” will be launched to present the current inclusion and ambition on wetlands, peatlands and mangroves in Parties’ Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs). Followed by a panel discussion where countries will share key insights on their own national processes and the inclusion of wetlands into their climate action strategies.
The side event is part of a series of events and products on the theme of peatlands and climate commitments under the Global Peatlands Initiative project. Its objective is to encourage countries to leverage and strengthen climate action in wetlands, including the integration of peatland and mangrove-related mitigation and adaptation priorities into NDCs and long-term low greenhouse gas emission development strategies (or LT-LEDS).
The outcomes of this side event are expected to support the COP14 discussions, specifically the Ramsar resolutions on:
- integrating wetland conservation and restoration into national sustainable development strategies; and,
- protection, management and restoration of wetlands as nature-based solutions to address the climate crisis.
The event contributes to the implementation of several Wetlands COP resolutions, including XIII.13 and XIII.14.
The side event gives an overview and key messages of the NDC analysis, further discussed by an expert panel, including representatives from the Ramsar Convention on Wetlands Secretariat, Wetlands International, and the countries of Indonesia, Zambia, Panama, and the United Kingdom.
