Details

The proposed side event, titled "Wetlands in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia: Protecting Ecosystems and Advancing Sustainability," will highlight Saudi Arabia’s growing efforts to conserve its wetland ecosystems following its accession to the Ramsar Convention in June 2024. In alignment with Vision 2030, the event will focus on the ecological, cultural, and economic value of wetlands and present the national strategy for their sustainable use and protection. Saudi Arabia is home to a variety of wetland types, including inland wetlands (wadis, marshes, hot springs), coastal wetlands (such as mangroves and salt marshes), and man-made wetlands (like dams and reservoirs). These ecosystems provide vital services such as habitat for biodiversity, climate regulation, water filtration, and support for local communities and economies.

The session will introduce the plan for updating the National Wetlands Strategy, which includes mapping and evaluating over 600 wetland sites across the Kingdom. The strategy outlines plans to nominate priority sites for Ramsar designation, enhance ecological monitoring, and engage stakeholders in wetland governance and management. A central feature of the session will be a case study on the Farasan Islands Biosphere Reserve, designated under UNESCO’s Man and the Biosphere Programme. The reserve hosts diverse ecosystems—including coral reefs, mangroves, and seagrass beds—and supports unique wildlife such as the Farasan gazelle, endangered marine turtles, and migratory birds. The presentation will explore its ecological value and potential for World Heritage recognition. The session will also address key challenges to wetland conservation in Saudi Arabia, such as pollution, invasive species, climate impacts, and water overuse, while presenting science-based solutions and national action plans currently underway. A short documentary film on Saudi Arabia’s wetlands will be screened during the session to visually engage participants and raise awareness of the Kingdom’s unique wetland landscapes and conservation efforts.
