This session will present key findings from the Global Wetland Outlook 2025 and outline urgent conservation actions, innovative financing solutions and policy responses to reverse the loss and degradation of wetlands.
The Global Wetland Outlook (GWO) 2025 is the flagship publication of the Scientific & Technical Review Panel (STRP) of the Convention on Wetlands, scheduled for public release at the end of June/early July 2025 in advance of COP15. The GWO will present up to date information on 1) the extent and loss of wetlands, 2) the costs to society resulting from the reduction in wetland ecosystem services and benefits, 3) the effort required to conserve 30% of remaining wetlands and to restore 30% of lost and degraded wetlands, and 4) describe the pathways and financial mechanisms achieve the conservation and wise of wetlands in all regions of the world.
The side event will be led by the Scientific & Technical Review Panel, including brief presentations from GWO lead authors and a panel discussion including the STRP Chair, IOP representatives, Secretariat science/policy staff and Contracting Party representatives.
The primary outcome of the side event is to share the key findings of GWO 2025 and identify opportunities to further disseminate and enhance the impact of the report.
