Details

As one of the most productive coastal ecosystems, mangroves provide essential ecological functions and play a crucial role in biodiversity conservation, climate resilience, and sustainable development. However, according to statistics released by the IUCN last year, 50 percent of the world's mangrove ecosystems face the risk of collapse due to deforestation, pollution, and climate change.

Aligned with the theme of COP15, this side event aims to strengthen global efforts in mangrove conservation by promoting sustainable management solutions, international cooperation, technological innovation, and stakeholder engagement. It will provide a platform for experts, policymakers, practitioners, and stakeholders to exchange insights on international collaboration, scientific advancements, and community-driven conservation initiatives.

The event will begin with an overview of the IMC’s mission, objectives, and key achievements, followed by a keynote session featuring expert presentations on enhancing international cooperation for mangrove conservation, innovative monitoring technologies such as satellite remote sensing and AI-driven data analysis, the role of mangroves in blue carbon sequestration, and successful community-based conservation models.

Moderated by IMC, the session will bring together leading global experts, researchers, and practitioners in mangrove conservation recommended by IMC, WWF, IUCN, and MCF, showcasing the collective expertise of key stakeholders in global mangrove conservation.

The envisaged outcomes of this side event include fostering international cooperation, exploring policy recommendations, highlighting innovative conservation approaches, and sharing successful community-led experiences. Key insights and proposed actions will be documented and made available to COP15 participants and relevant stakeholders to support future policy dialogues and collaborative initiatives.
